Let’s get real for a minute. Juneteenth is the ultimate moment to honor our ancestors and the resilient spirit of the Black community. It's a time to unite, celebrate freedom, and embrace our beautiful heritage.

The History of Juneteenth

Although the Emancipation Proclamation was signed in 1863, it couldn’t be made official in areas still under Confederate control — so not everyone got the memo. In fact, it wasn’t until two and a half years later that word reached the westernmost Confederate state of Texas.

On June 19, 1865, troops arrived in Galveston to announce that the last 250,000 enslaved African Americans were free by executive decree. This day, now known as Juneteenth, commemorates the official end of slavery in the United States.

This federal holiday holds tremendous significance as it represents the resilience and perseverance of our ancestors, serving as a reminder of the ongoing fight for civil rights and social justice. Over the years, it's evolved into a time for celebration, reflection, and education — a moment to honor our heritage and strengthen the bonds within the Black community.

Celebrate by Shopping at Black-Owned Businesses

Donate to Black Organizations

Donating to Black organizations is a meaningful way to honor the past, uplift the present, and shape a better future. Consider giving to organizations like these this month as a way to mark Juneteenth:

  • Black Girls CODE: A nonprofit that provides technology education to young women and girls of color
  • The Innocence Project: An organization committed to freeing the innocent, preventing wrongful convictions, and creating fair, compassionate, and equitable systems of justice
  • The Okra Project: A mutual aid collective that supports Black trans, non-binary, and gender-nonconforming people

Go beyond hashtags and platitudes. As you celebrate Juneteenth 2023, make a conscious effort to amplify Black voices, invest in their success, and contribute to a future where every dream can thrive. Together, we can make a lasting impact and create a more inclusive and equitable society.
