Celebrating National Hair Loss Awareness with The Frontal Queen

August is National Hair Loss Awareness Month, a time to shed light on a condition that affects millions of women, especially Black women in deeply personal and often invisible ways.

At The Frontal Queen, we’ve always believed hair is more than a beauty statement,  it’s tied to confidence, culture and identity. Since 2017, we’ve run an ongoing custom wig giveaway for women experiencing alopecia caused by cancer, lupus, and other medical reasons  who  are  williing to share their story as a way to encourage others.. 

Understanding Alopecia: It’s Not One Size Fits All

Alopecia isn’t just one condition; it’s a general term for hair loss that can come from different causes. While genetics and autoimmune conditions like alopecia areata are well-known, many of us are affected by forms of hair loss caused by tension, styling habits, or even emotional stress.

We break it down in our Alopecia Awareness resource library that dives deep into the full spectrum of alopecia types. But for this blog, we’re focusing on four common forms that disproportionately affect our community:

  • Traction Alopecia: Caused by repeated tension on the scalp from tight braids, ponytails, or sew-ins.
  • Chignon Alopecia: Hair loss from frequently wearing tight buns or updos in the same spot.
  • Trichotillomania: A compulsive behaviour where individuals pull out their own hair, often as a response to stress or anxiety.
  • Folliculitis:  Inflammation of the hair follicles, often caused by buildup, bacterial infections, or leaving styles in too long.

How to Prevent Hair Loss Based on Your Go-To Styles

For Wig Wearers:

  • Always wear a wig cap to protect your scalp from friction and keep your natural hair tucked away neatly.
  • Avoid tight braid-downs when prepping for installs; your edges will thank you.
  • Use gentle lace adhesives or glue-less alternatives and never rip off your wig. Use a glue remover or alcohol-based spray to lift it safely.
  • Wash your hair regularly, even when wearing a wig, and avoid keeping installs in for too long.

For Ponytail Lovers:

We love a slicked-back look, but not at the cost of your crown.

For the Braided Baddies:

Protective styles should protect — not harm.

  • Don’t let your braider snatch your soul or your edges. If it hurts, it’s too tight.
  • Don’t leave braids in too long,  buildup and bacterial irritation can lead to Folliculitis.
  • Use a nourishing edge control to keep your hairline sleek without drying it out.

General Hair Care Tips:

  • Wash your scalp regularly with sulfate-free shampoos that cleanse without stripping.
  • Moisturize your hair regularly.
  • Take breaks between styles to give your scalp time to breathe.
  • Sleep in a satin bonnet or on a silk pillowcase to reduce friction and breakage.
