Hey, baddies! Spring is in the air, and you know what that means… That’s right: time for a good spring cleaning! It’s time to clean up our closets, our homes, and of course, our hair game.

As a wig wearer and professional stylist, trust me: I know how much of a beating our wigs and hair tools take throughout the year. That’s why it's important to take the time to give your wig collection some much-needed TLC!

Scared to confront the dusty wigs in your closet? Never fear, the Frontal Queen is here to help you get your hair game back in shape for spring. In this post, I'll share all my tried-and-true tips for giving your wigs and hair tools the spring makeover they deserve.

Let’s get to work!

Declutter your collection

The most important part of any spring cleaning is decluttering. It’s time to Marie Kondo our wigs and hair products, asking ourselves the hard questions.

  • Do you really need that wig you haven’t worn in years?
  • Is it time to say goodbye to that hair gel that’s been sitting on your shelf since who knows when?
  • Are you still holding onto a flatiron that’s definitely seen better days?

If it’s no longer serving a purpose, it’s time to let it go!

Don’t be afraid to donate or sell wigs that you no longer reach for. There’s no shame in passing on your gently used wigs to someone who’ll appreciate them just as much as you did. Plus, you’ll be making room for new ones that will better suit your needs.

And remember, hair products have an expiration date, too! It’s a good idea to replace anything on your shelf that’s older than 12 months if opened, and 36 months if unopened. Health and safety, first!

Clean your wigs

Once you’ve decluttered the wigs that no longer spark joy, it’s time to deep-clean the ones that do.

Now, you should be washing your wig regularly to remove dirt, sweat, product buildup, and odors. I recommend washing every 10 to 15 wears for synthetic wigs, and every 7 to 10 wears for human hair wigs.

When spring cleaning, handle your wigs gently, brushing them out with a wide-tooth comb before hitting them with any water. When washing, use a wig-safe shampoo and conditioner. Afterward, gently squeeze or blot any excess water with a towel, then let those girlies air dry.

A little regular TLC goes a long way in keeping your wig looking fancy all year round! Once your wigs are looking fresh and fly, it’s time to get your workspace wig-ready again.

Tidy up your workspace

Let’s face it — we can all get a little messy when styling our wigs. But a little bit of organization can make a whole world of difference!

Start by clearing out any trash or clutter from your workspace. Toss those empty product containers and stretched-out elastics taking up valuable real estate. Once all the junk is gone, give your workspace a good wipe-down with some disinfectant to make sure everything is squeaky clean.

Next, give your handy dandy tools some love. Wash all your wig combs and brushes with mild soap and water. Make sure to rinse them thoroughly, and let them air dry before using them on any wigs.

Then, collect all your lace front tape and adhesives, check their expiration dates, and store them in a cool, dry place. Use storage containers, baggies, or drawers to keep all your tools and product separate and easy to find.

And finally, rethink how you store your wigs. Consider investing in wig stands or heads to help keep their shape longer and prevent tangling. Plus, you’ll be able to see all your wigs at once, making it easier to pick out the right hairstyle to match your fit each day.

Try new styles and products

Now that you’ve done the work and made room in your collection for new things, get ready to have some fun and experiment! Spring is the perfect time to refresh your look and try out new products and hairstyles. You deserve it!

In the market for a new do? Check out social media platforms like Instagram, TikTok and Pinterest for inspiration and to find out what hairstyles are trending. I also love watching tutorial videos on YouTube to learn how to create new looks!

Don't be afraid to try new products either. With so many products out there, it can be overwhelming to choose what to use. Look for wig care products specifically designed for wigs, such as wig shampoos, conditioners, and styling sprays. You can also try new hair accessories like clips, headbands, and scarves to switch up your hair care routine.

Spring-clean your way to better hair

And that’s it! By following these simple tips, you can give your wigs and hair tools a new lease on life this spring.
